As I See It
So, our Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Bibi) is prepared to make any and all agreements – including a pact with rightwing Kach/Kahane extremist in a bid to stay in power. He and they seem to forget that of Israel’s near eight million citizens, only 75% are Jewish. The balance of Israel’s citizens are Muslim, Christian and various other recognized/non-recognized religions, who are protected under Israel’s current constitution.
Bibi’s actions remind me of that wonderful scene of the late, great Kenneth Williams when he played Cesare in Carry on Cloe – “Infamy infamy, they've all got it in for me”. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6BJJe9JV_A)
I’m not a Bibi supporter or for that matter of the Likud in general, which may come as a surprise given that I consider myself a conservative/nationalist. Indeed, to borrow a line from Evita, on some issues I stand “Slightly to the right of Attila the Hun”.
On a more serious note – and this is not “fake news” – I can see Bibi and his supportive lapdogs taking a page from (the Turkish President) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan songbook. Enacting legislation to change the constitution of Israel from a Parliamentary system with a Prime Minister and figure-head President to a pure Presidential system, where Bibi is of course President.
It’s not beyond the realm of possibilities, and he already has his successor in the wings under training. Watch out for the Netanyahu dynasty.
